Looking Down the Rows

I must have been French in a former life.
I’m in love with the place —the food, the language and the casual elegance, especially in Provence.
For seven summers I took a painting trip to Southern France. I painted many things, but a favorite is the lavender fields. To paint in the field with the smell of lavender wafting, the bees humming and the sun shining is transcendent.
You would think that there are only so many times you can paint lavender, but it’s not so. The landscape and atmospheric conditions play out in countless ways. In "Looking Down the Rows," I liked the way the rich color in the dirt set off the lavender color and how the rows lead your to the stripe of bright yellow green vegetation, which seemed like a fun splash of color.

This painting was featured in an exhibition in Moscow in September 2019.
